On the 20th of February 2012, the Fondation pour la Recherche Stratégique and the Prague Security Studies Institute, in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic and Embassy of France in the Czech Republic, will organize a high-level conference on European energy security. The conference, entitled “Ensuring Energy Security in Europe: The Need for a Multifaceted Approach”, will be held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Prague, Czech Republic.
The question of energy security has evolved into one of the most globally debated issues to date. Recent geopolitical developments spanning from crises associated with access to gas, nuclear energy challenges raised by events in Fukushima, uncertain global climate change obligations and managing an unpredictable Iran, have triggered excessively high and volatile prices in oil, among other markets, magnifying concerns about short-term risks to economic growth and long-term energy security. While energy security concerns may vary country to country, there exists a strong common interest to make sure that Europe can access energy at reasonable costs, consume it in a sustainable way, and manage it in a collective manner. To achieve this, the enhancement of energy security will require a far-sighted and cooperative approach internationally, as well as a variety of specific initiatives and interventions at the regional and national level.
Our conference will focus on the strategic, economic, political and technological issues surrounding the present day energy security debate in Europe, including technological options to ensure the energy security of Central Europe. An emphasis will be put on the nuclear option of this debate. Participants from various stakeholder administrations, policy makers and experts will discuss political and technological options for a sustainable energy policy and the role which the European Union could play in enhancing European energy security.
